Course overview

This course provides training for the HP StorageWorks MSL5000/MSL6000 Series Library including both 5U and 10U models. The course reviews hardware components, supported hardware and software, capacity and performance, installation procedures, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and remove/replace procedures. Hands-on laboratories are included to correlate with the classroom materials.

The lab portions of this course will provide the student with a hands-on opportunity to apply their knowledge of associated field replaceable unit (FRU) videos. Through lab exercises, the student will install a multi-module library with pass-through mechanism (PTM), conduct operational tasks, perform maintenance, as well as troubleshoot, and remove and replace FRUs.

This course does not cover training for the following:

  • General storage and tape backup concepts
  • SAN connectivity foundations
  • Backup software
  • Enterprise Backup Solutions

Prerequisites

In order to successfully complete this course, the student should have knowledge of or experience in the following:

  • Completion of MSL5000/MSL6000 series library service and support WBT Course number: 4954
  • HP StorageWorks Tape Technologies and Standalone Tape Drives Service and Support WBT course number: 700
  • Knowledge of Library and Tape Tools (L&TT)

Audience

This course is intended for HP Channel Partners and Service Personnel who provide installation and/or warranty support assistance

Course objective

In this lecture/lab you will:

  • Conduct a pre-installation assessment.
  • Perform typical library operations using the GUI touch screen including:
  • Setting SCSI and library options
  • Using the mail slot
  • Moving tape cartridges between library drives and magazine slots
  • Perform maintenance tasks including:
  • Upgrading the firmware
  • Preparing a library for service
  • Preparing a library for cleaning the drive head
  • Diagnose a faulty library using the GUI touch screen or remote host based utilities.
  • Use FSC codes to isolate faulty subsystem or library connections.
  • Remove and replace critical FRUs.

Cancellation policy

Registration may be canceled without tuition charge if Hewlett-Packard Training Registration receives notification of cancellation twenty-one business days prior to class. Cancellations made twenty to three business days prior to class will incur a $150 cancellation charge ($210 in Canada, plus applicable taxes). Cancellations made two business days prior or less to class date and/or no-shows will incur the full tuition charge.

All course offerings are dependent on classroom, equipment and instructor availability. Hewlett-Packard reserves the right to cancel or change a class at any time without liability to the attendee for costs incurred due to such cancellations or changes, including, but not limited to, cancellation penalties for transportation or accommodations.
